Looking for a unique escape from Mexico City? The Grutas de Tolantongo are a natural paradise of thermal waters nestled in a canyon surrounded by caves, pools, waterfalls, and dramatic mountain landscapes.
At Wynwood House, we’ve gathered everything you need to plan your visit to this hidden gem and make the most of the experience.
This breathtaking natural complex is located in the Mezquital Valley, in the municipality of Cardonal, state of Hidalgo, Mexico—approximately 200 km northeast of Mexico City. Its mountainous setting enhances its charm, as thermal waters flow from deep within the hills through limestone formations to form rivers, pools, and waterfalls.
If you prefer to drive, follow these steps:
The park offers a wide variety of natural attractions, from thermal areas and caves to outdoor spaces ideal for unwinding from the city’s hustle.
The main caves are located in the lower part of the valley. To get there, you'll need to drive to another area of the complex and walk about 1 km.
There are two entrances:
Bring a waterproof flashlight and hold tightly to the safety ropes, as the current can be strong.
In the area known as “Paraíso Escondido,” you’ll find more than 40 thermal pools fed by 12 hot spring sources. Immersing yourself in these waters is a deeply relaxing experience that revitalizes both body and mind.
This is one of the park’s main attractions. Its calm, blue, mineral-rich waters (high in magnesium and chloride) are perfect for sunbathing, floating, or simply relaxing amid nature.
Next to the thermal pools is a hanging bridge offering panoramic canyon views. Nearby, you’ll find a secret tunnel leading to a lesser-known hidden cave with warm water—ideal for a more private soak.
Each area of the complex includes pools of different sizes and depths:
There’s a designated campground where you can rent tents and mats. Campfires and barbecues are allowed, making this a full outdoor experience.
To avoid crowds, visit during the week and outside of high seasons (holidays and long weekends). Monday mornings are perfect for enjoying the space peacefully and without crowds.
The riverbeds and cave floors can be slippery and rocky. Water shoes are essential for comfort and safety. You can purchase them at the park or along the road from Ixmiquilpan.
The Grutas de Tolantongo are a must-see destination for nature lovers, thermal spring enthusiasts, and adventurers. If you’re already in Mexico City and craving a refreshing experience, this is the perfect weekend escape.
