What to Do at the Grutas de Tolantongo

The park offers a wide variety of natural attractions, from thermal areas and caves to outdoor spaces ideal for unwinding from the city’s hustle.

The Caves and Thermal Tunnel

The main caves are located in the lower part of the valley. To get there, you'll need to drive to another area of the complex and walk about 1 km.

There are two entrances:

  • The upper tunnel is narrow with very hot water.
  • The lower entrance is wider and leads to a cave where the thermal current flows naturally.

Bring a waterproof flashlight and hold tightly to the safety ropes, as the current can be strong.

Thermal Pools

In the area known as “Paraíso Escondido,” you’ll find more than 40 thermal pools fed by 12 hot spring sources. Immersing yourself in these waters is a deeply relaxing experience that revitalizes both body and mind.

Thermal River

This is one of the park’s main attractions. Its calm, blue, mineral-rich waters (high in magnesium and chloride) are perfect for sunbathing, floating, or simply relaxing amid nature.

Suspension Bridge and Hidden Cave

Next to the thermal pools is a hanging bridge offering panoramic canyon views. Nearby, you’ll find a secret tunnel leading to a lesser-known hidden cave with warm water—ideal for a more private soak.

Swimming Pools

Each area of the complex includes pools of different sizes and depths:

  • In “La Gruta,” you’ll find a diving pool and a kid-friendly pool for relaxed swimming.
  • In “Paraíso Escondido,” there’s a pool with a waterslide for added fun.

Camping

There’s a designated campground where you can rent tents and mats. Campfires and barbecues are allowed, making this a full outdoor experience.

Best Time to Visit the Grutas de Tolantongo

To avoid crowds, visit during the week and outside of high seasons (holidays and long weekends). Monday mornings are perfect for enjoying the space peacefully and without crowds.
